Sonar X2 and New Computer
Last week I finally got a new computer after about 8 years of suffering with the old one. Pretty big speed difference! Especially since I now have an SSD for the system drive and another one for the audio files.
But the problem is I went from 32bit XP to 64bit Windows 7. A lot of things just don’t work the same any more. At least in Sonar.
I lost a lot of Sony effects I’ve been using in every project. That means when I open something I was working on before I have to first replace all those effects and then reset and remix, THEN I can continue working.
I also had a number of strange problems that took a while to resolve. The first one was losing the ability to use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out in Sound Forge. BIG problem!! The second was that when I opened a sound clip from Sonar in Sound Forge, I had no sound in Sound Forge! BIG problem!!
Oddly enough, both problems were solved by getting a new Logitech wireless mouse to replace my (not so) old Microsoft mouse. Who knew!!
Other problems included:
Sonar turned Local to Off on all my synths rendering them completely USELESS. Turned out that there is a setting in the TTSseq.ini file. The additional problems were: No documentation on this! The only thing the help file says is “Here’s how to turn this on”, not how to turn it off! Fortunately it’s as simple as changing the 1 to a 0. The second problem (or first) was that it suggests you have to turn this feature ON, obviously it is now on by default in the program. Third is that the location of this file is different than documented. It is in the User directory, not in the Programs directory. Fourth is that Windows 7 search doesn’t work very well and I couldn’t find it with just a normal search. Luckily someone else mentioned it in a forum.
Sound Card: Emu 1212m didn’t work at all at first. Took quite a while to figure out Patch Mix and create a new patch so it would output a stereo file to Sonar and Sound Forge.
Sonar X2 is almost completely different from Sonar X1!! I am SLOWLY learning but it is very uncomfortable and I am hardly recording anything at all.
I’m sure there were other things but I think I’ve already blocked them out. To horrible to remember. Maybe I’ll edit this later and add more. I expect it’ll be another 2-3 weeks before I start to feel comfortable with this new system (and new keyboard and mouse too) so I wont be too productive in the meantime.
In other news, I have almost decided on getting a Doepfer modular system this summer. That could be very cool! But it means I wont bother with the Korg MS-20 mini just to save money for that. I’ll get one eventually though!
